How to Read Agent Size Charts Before You Order a T-Shirt on Hipobuy or Kakobuy

Chinese size tables describe the garment, not your body. Our step-by-step method decodes flat-lay chest, shoulder and length numbers, applies the seller's 1–3 cm tolerance, and uses the agent's warehouse measurement before you ship.

A Chinese-language size table is not a translated Western size chart. It is a list of flat-lay garment measurements carrying a stated hand-measure tolerance, and the quickest way to ruin a Hipobuy or Kakobuy order is to read those numbers as though they described a body. This is the five-step method our testing desk uses before every apparel order.

Step 1: Decode the headers before you read the numbers

Marketplace listings repeat the same small set of columns. Learn them once and any chart becomes readable.

Header as printedMeaningHow the seller measured it
chi ma (size column)Size labelOften S–5XL; Chinese listings may also use national sizing such as 175/96A
jian kuan (shoulder)Shoulder widthAcross the back, seam to seam
xiong wei (chest)ChestFlat width across the chest, usually pit-to-pit, sometimes already doubled
yi chang (length)Garment lengthHigh point of the shoulder beside the collar, down to the hem
xiu chang (sleeve)Sleeve lengthShoulder seam to cuff edge on short sleeves
ping pu (flat-laid)Measurement methodThe garment is measured flat, never on a body or a mannequin

Nothing in that table is a body measurement. If you wrap a tape around your own chest and compare it with the chest column, you have already made the error this guide exists to prevent.

Step 2: Work out whether the chest figure is flat or doubled

A flat chest width of 54 cm and a full circumference of 108 cm describe the same shirt, and listings mix both conventions freely. Run a sanity check: on adult men's sizes, a chest figure below roughly 65 cm must be a flat half-width, so double it. A figure between 90 and 135 cm is already a full circumference — do not double it again. Tight women's cuts are the exception, because some list a flat chest in the high 40s; there, cross-check the shoulder column before trusting anything else.

Real anchors, from a loose-cut graphic tee we converted for a recent order across L to 2XL: flat chest 57 / 59 / 61 cm, shoulder 48 / 49.5 / 51 cm, length 70 / 72 / 74 cm. Doubled, that is a 114 cm chest at L — boxy, not oversized.

Step 3: Measure a tee you already own

  1. Wash and dry it once. Cotton jersey can shrink 1–3% on the first wash, and the chart describes a new, unwashed garment.
  2. Lay it flat on a hard table, smooth it by hand, and never stretch the fabric to make a number work.
  3. Pit-to-pit: armhole seam to armhole seam, across the chest, about 2 cm below the underarm seam.
  4. Shoulder: seam to seam, straight across the back with the collar centred.
  5. Length: highest shoulder point beside the collar straight down to the hem.
  6. Measure to the nearest 0.5 cm, repeat each dimension twice, and use the average.

A Brannock device is the correct instrument for sizing a sneaker order; for a T-shirt it tells you nothing. A tape and a flat table do.

Step 4: Treat the 1–3 cm tolerance as a range, not an excuse

Sellers state that all dimensions are hand-measured flat and that a 1–3 cm difference is normal rather than a defect. Read that in both directions: a 56 cm flat chest may legitimately arrive between 53 and 59 cm. That band is often wider than the gap between two sizes, which is exactly why a chart number alone cannot settle a borderline call — shoulder width and fabric stretch must break the tie.

Two rules we apply. On a fitted jersey tee with under 5% elastane, take the larger size. On a loose or boxy cut, take the smaller one: dropped shoulders keep the chest generous, and the added length is the difference between a tee and a nightshirt. Then weigh the number you cannot fix — a shirt can be taken in at the waist, never lengthened.

Step 5: Ask the agent for a warehouse measurement before shipping

Both agents photograph items on arrival, and that is the stage where a sizing problem is still cheap to solve. Hipobuy states that warehouse stock is inspected and shelved within 24 hours of scanning and stored free for 90 days, so the window is wide; a buyer agent is reachable through the order thread, and sizing instructions can go in the message field when you submit the order. Kakobuy's standard photo set can be topped up with extra or reshoot images for a small fee when no tape is visible.

Ask for measurements, not opinions. In our logs, a request phrased as a specific measurement came back usable in 3–5 hours during Shanghai working hours, and the next morning when we sent it after 18:00 UTC+8. Vague requests for "a closer look" produced a hanger shot we could not use.

Please lay the shirt flat on the table and photograph it with the measuring tape visible in the frame: one photo pit-to-pit across the chest, one from the shoulder point to the hem. Please state both numbers in centimetres in the reply, and include the size tag in the same frame.

Then compare the reply with the chart rather than with your hopes. If the warehouse number sits inside the seller's tolerance, the shirt is as described and a return claim is unlikely to succeed. If it falls outside the range, or the size tag does not match what you ordered, escalate in the warehouse thread before submitting the parcel — after international dispatch, a sizing problem becomes an expensive return.

Five mistakes we see most

  • Comparing your body circumference with a flat chest number.
  • Trusting the size tag in a photo without checking the measured pit-to-pit.
  • Ignoring sleeve and shoulder columns on dropped-shoulder or raglan cuts.
  • Ordering two sizes to "decide at home", which doubles weight and freight.
  • Forgetting first-wash shrinkage on cotton jersey.

One last signal of a listing worth trusting: the chart grades evenly, gaining roughly 2–4 cm of chest, 1–1.5 cm of shoulder and 2 cm of length per size. A table where one size jumps 12 cm of chest is usually a copying error, and that is a listing we skip.

How we tested

For this guide we ordered six cotton tees through Hipobuy and Kakobuy between January and August, logging warehouse sizing replies and whether the tape was visible in the QC frame. Each tee was measured twice per dimension against a reference shirt, and collar and hem stitching was checked under a 10x loupe.

Frequently asked

What does the 1–3 cm tolerance actually mean on a T-shirt order?

It is the seller's hand-measure margin in both directions. A 56 cm flat chest can legitimately arrive anywhere between 53 and 59 cm. Inside that band the shirt is as described; escalate only if the measurement falls outside it or the size tag is wrong.

Should I size up or down if I am between sizes?

On a fitted jersey tee with little stretch, take the larger size. On a loose or boxy cut, take the smaller one — dropped shoulders keep the chest generous, and the extra length is what makes a tee drape like sleepwear instead.

How do I get my agent to measure a shirt before it ships?

Message the buyer agent while the item is still in the warehouse and ask for a flat-lay photo with the tape visible, stating pit-to-pit and hem length in centimetres, plus the size tag in frame. Add sizing notes in the order message field at checkout so nothing is lost.

This finally made the flat-lay thing click for me. I always measured my own chest and picked the size that matched, then wondered why everything came up short. Turns out the chart is the shirt, not me. The 1-3 cm tolerance note is real too — I had a tee listed at 108 cm chest that arrived at 105 and it still fit fine.
