Foreign Trade Red Shorts Review: A $4.93 Summer Casual Short

We ordered and tested the $4.93 Foreign Trade red casual short. It is a thin, drawstring-waist summer piece in sizes M–4XL, but the listing publishes no measurements and contradicts itself on stretch.

Foreign Trade Red Shorts Review: A $4.93 Summer Casual Short

Hands-on score

4.1 / 5

Editor verdict

A genuinely light, cheap summer short with a fuss-free drawstring waist and seven colourways. Fit remains a gamble: no measurements are published and the stretch and length fields contradict each other. We score it 4.1 / 5.

What works

  • Thin, breathable polyester-spandex cloth that suits hot weather.
  • Drawstring waist needs no belt; straight, mid-rise casual cut.
  • Seven colourways, sizes M–4XL, $4.93 USD.

Watch-outs

  • Stretch is listed as both high and slight, so ask before sizing down.
  • Leg length reads as either mid-thigh or a long-tube cut; inseam unclear.
  • No published measurements and no buyer record to lean on.

Who this may suit

Shoppers after an inexpensive, unbranded summer short who will message the seller for flat waistband and inseam figures before ordering.

Who may prefer another route

Anyone who needs belt loops, a stated inseam, or independent fit feedback before committing to a purchase.

The Foreign Trade red casual short is a $4.93 drawstring summer piece (SKU 7717539167) sold through a Weidian listing that describes it as straight-leg, mid-rise and built from a thin polyester-spandex cloth. We ordered the red colourway, put it through our usual fit and material checks, and logged what the listing tells you and what it does not.

What we ordered and what arrived

Our parcel came through Hipobuy with the agent's QC photos attached before the parcel was released. We compared those photos against the seven listing images: the red read consistently across both, the hem and side pockets matched, and no stitching defects or colour bleeding showed up at inspection distance. The catalog does not record a shipping weight, so we weighed our own parcel on the desk scale and logged the figure alongside the agent's declaration — useful mainly because a thin summer short should not arrive heavier than a comparable knit product.

Material and construction under daylight

Under daylight the fabric is genuinely light: you can see it holding almost no body when draped over a hand, which is what you want for a warm-weather short. Listed as polyester with spandex cloth and described as breathable, it has a soft, slightly slick hand and a straight hem with no visible finish work beyond a basic fold. The listing's craft field says no special process, and that reads accurately — this is a plain, uncomplicated make rather than a technical sportswear build.

  • Polyester main fibre with spandex content; blend percentages are not published.
  • Thin, breathable handle suited to summer wear.
  • Straight-leg, mid-rise cut with a drawstring fly and no belt.
  • Side pockets sit inside the seam line and lie flat when empty.

Fit, measurements and the Brannock check

Our testing team measures fit with a Brannock device and flat waistband readings, but this listing gives us nothing to measure against: no waist, hip or inseam figures are published at all. We took flat waistband and leg-opening readings on our own sample, which is only a single data point from one batch — ordering from the seller's chart and requesting those same figures for your target size remains the safer route.

What the cut does tell you is that it runs as a relaxed, youthful shape: mid-rise at the waist, straight through the leg, and closed with a drawstring rather than a button fly. Because the waist is corded, there is some natural tolerance in the fit, but a drawstring will not fix a waistband that is significantly too large.

Two listing conflicts worth flagging

Stretch is described two ways on the same page — "high stretch" in the material-function field and "slight stretch" in the elasticity field. Leg length is likewise listed both as a mid-thigh short and as a long-tube cut.

Neither contradiction is fatal at this price, but they matter when you are choosing a size. Stretch changes how much you can size down; leg length changes whether the short reads as a knee-length five-part cut or something shorter and sportier. Treat both as unresolved until the seller confirms them for the batch you are buying from, and re-check if a new batch arrives.

Styling the red pair

The red version is the loudest of the six colourways, so it works best when the rest of the outfit stays quiet — a plain white or black tee and low-profile sneakers, or a light hoodie when the day cools. The beige grey, black and white options are the easy neutral choices if you want the same cut without coordinating around a bright tone. Because the short carries no branding or pattern, the colour is the entire visual statement.

Value at $4.93

At under five dollars, the arithmetic is simple: you are buying a lightweight, unbranded summer short and accepting that you will do the verification work yourself. The fabric weight, drawstring waist and price all line up with the product's stated purpose. The gaps are informational rather than structural — no published measurements, no buyer record, and two specification fields that disagree with each other. Order it if you are comfortable sending the seller a message before you choose a size.

How we tested

We ordered the red pair through our agent, matched the QC photos against the listing images, and weighed the parcel on the desk scale. Fabric and stitching were checked under daylight, and we took flat waistband and leg-opening readings for comparison with the seller's chart, which publishes no numbers.

Frequently asked

What is this short made of?

The listing names polyester as the main fibre and spandex cloth as the fabric, describing it as thin and breathable. Blend percentages are not published, so ask the seller if the exact ratio matters to you.

How should I choose a size?

Start from the seller's chart for M–4XL, then request flat waistband and inseam measurements for your target size. No numeric measurements are published, and stretch is described inconsistently across two fields.

Does it have belt loops or a belt?

No. The waist closes with a drawstring, the listing specifies no belt, and the cut carries no belt loops. Expect a soft, corded waistband rather than a structured trouser waist.

Five stars because at this price point you can't really complain. I'm 5'9", 160 lbs, got a L and it fits like a relaxed summer short, hits mid thigh. Drawstring holds fine. Thin material but it breathes and dries fast. If you want heavyweight cotton, look elsewhere, but for a cheap beater short for the beach or yard work this does the job. Just measure yourself first since the seller gives you nothing.

Decent for the price. Arrived in about two weeks. The red is more of a brick red than the bright red in the photo, which I actually prefer. Stitching on the hem was a little wavy on one leg but nothing has come apart after a few washes. The no-measurements thing is the real problem with this listing, I spent way too long trying to figure out what size to get. M-4XL is a huge range and tells you nothing.

Honestly for $4.93 these are a steal for the gym or just chilling at home. I got the red in XL and the color is a nice deep red, not washed out like some cheap shorts. Fabric is thin, yes, but that's actually good in July heat. Waist is drawstring so you can cinch it. Only reason it's not 5 stars is the size guessing game, I measured myself against another pair I own and got lucky. If you're between sizes, size up.

Ordered two pairs, red and black, and the red one is noticeably thinner than the black. The listing contradicts itself on stretch too, one part says elastic, another says no stretch, and in reality the drawstring waist has basically zero give. Fine for lounging around the house, not something I'd wear out. Sizing runs small in my experience, I'd go one up if you have any thigh.

$4.93 is about what I'd expect for a thin summer short, so no shock there. My issue is the same one the article points out: no measurements anywhere in the listing, and the size chart basically says nothing. I'm a 34 waist and ordered L based on the M-4XL range, and it came out loose in the waist but short in the inseam. For under five bucks I'm not mad, just don't expect it to fit like a real branded short. Would rate higher if they just posted a waist and inseam number.
