Dior Black Athletic Shorts Review: Testing a $7.91 Paisley-Basketball Short Against Its Own Size Chart

We ordered, weighed and wore the $7.91 Dior athletic shorts: the paisley-basketball print reads clean in daylight, the loose mid-rise cut moves well, and the size chart still needs a tape measure before you commit.

Dior Black Athletic Shorts Review: Testing a $7.91 Paisley-Basketball Short Against Its Own Size Chart

Hands-on score

4.1 / 5

Editor verdict

A light, loose polyester short with a clean paisley-basketball print and working mesh lining at a bargain price. Hands-on score 4.1 / 5 — held back by a size chart that needs verification and entry-level fabric texture.

What works

  • Allover print stays crisp and registered under daylight
  • Mesh lining with no inner brief, comfortable over underwear
  • Loose mid-rise cut moves well for running and cycling

Watch-outs

  • Published size chart carries up to 2–3 cm error
  • Shell has a faint sheen and papery hand at close range
  • Evidence for this batch's fabric durability is thin

Who this may suit

Buyers who want a loose, mid-rise graphical training short for running, cycling or warm-weather casual wear and will confirm flat measurements before ordering.

Who may prefer another route

Anyone who needs documented fabric longevity or a guaranteed chart match. The one negative fabric claim concerns a different Dior listing and cannot be settled from this product data.

These are the cheapest shorts in our current apparel rotation, and we treated them accordingly. We ordered a pair through our agent, logged the incoming QC photos, weighed the parcel on arrival, checked the fabric and print under daylight, then wore them through two training sessions and one casual day before scoring. What we found is a short that behaves better than its price and worse than its chart.

What arrived and how we tested it

The parcel contained the shorts, a mesh lining, and nothing else — no inner brief, no hangtag matching the 129-unit list tag noted in the catalog data. We photographed the packaging, recorded the parcel weight and compared the item against the QC images the agent supplied before shipping. The listing's own weight field is blank, so our own scale reading is the only weight figure we can stand behind.

Flat measurements were taken with the drawstring relaxed, then again with the waist stretched to a comfortable tension. Fit was assessed on a Brannock-measured foot first for stance and stride, then at the waist and thigh opening. Fabric was inspected under north-facing daylight and compared with two retail mesh-lined training shorts of known composition.

The print is the actual product here

Black ground, allover white graphic mixing paisley motifs, basketballs, stars and clover shapes across the front, with the side panels continuing the pattern rather than cutting it off. In daylight the white reads as a clean, even ivory-white instead of the grey washout we see on cheap heat-transfer prints, and the pattern stays registered across the center seam. At arm's length the graphic is busy; up close the linework holds.

The centered drawstring waist and loose, mid-rise cut define the silhouette. Ours sat at the natural mid-rise point without riding down during a 40-minute run, and the leg opening has enough room that the pattern does not distort when you stride.

Fabric and sweat handling

The shell is a lightweight synthetic with a slight dry, papery hand — closer to a running short than to a cotton-blend casual short. Sweat moved off it quickly during our run and the mesh lining kept the fabric from clinging to the thigh. The absence of an inner brief is a genuine plus: it means the short sits over your own underwear instead of doubling up, and the lining still gives enough structure that the shorts do not collapse when wet.

Where it falls short of a premium training short is depth of texture. Under daylight the shell has a faint sheen along the fold lines, and the drawstring cord feels basic in the hand. Nothing failed in testing, but this is not a fabric you would mistake for a heavy technical knit.

The sizing problem is the real caution

The listing allows 1–2 cm of variance and the size run reaches XXXL, which sounds generous. Buyers of Dior replicas have separately reported that published size charts for this kind of apparel carry roughly 2–3 cm of error, so the chart is an approximation layered on top of an approximation. Our own pair landed within the tolerance we expected, but we still would not order by habit.

“Same, but I think I’ll go with M as well, because whatever size you pick there will be 2-3 cm error as mentioned in their sizing guide.” — rep-community buyer thread on Dior rep apparel sizing

Our method: take the seller's flat waist and inseam figures, add the stated 1–2 cm tolerance in the direction that hurts, and compare that number with a short you already own. If the stretched waist measurement is what you rely on, ask the agent to measure it for you before the parcel leaves the warehouse.

The one claim we cannot settle

A recurring criticism in rep communities is that some Dior shorts replicas look like cheap fabric, with buyers recommending a return in favour of sellers better known for Dior apparel.

“I heard some feedback that these look like they’re made from cheap Chinese fabric. Does anyone own these and can say whether or not they look okay? … Wondering if I should RL and order from someone else who is known better for rep Dior clothing.” — rep-community QC thread

That comment was made about a different Dior shorts listing, not this one, so it stands as a prompt rather than a finding. On our pair the shell does not look cheap in daylight, but we cannot transfer that observation to another batch. If you are ordering after a restock, request close-up daylight photos of the fabric and the print edge at the seam before approving the parcel.

Who should consider it, and how we score it

For running, cycling, court sports and warm-weather casual wear, this is a well-priced loose short with a graphic that holds up in person and a mesh lining that does its job. It loses points for a chart that needs independent verification and a shell that reads entry-level in texture. We retest when a new batch or material update appears, and this score will move if the fabric changes.

How we tested

Parcel unpacked, weighed and photographed; the shorts were measured flat, worn for two training sessions, and the shell and print inspected under daylight against retail mesh-lined training shorts. QC photos were matched to the delivered black colorway before scoring.

Frequently asked

How does it fit compared with the listed size chart?

The cut is loose and mid-rise, and our pair sat inside the listing's 1–2 cm tolerance. Buyers of Dior rep apparel separately report about 2–3 cm of chart error, so ask the agent for flat waist and inseam measurements before shipping.

Is there an inner brief or liner?

There is a mesh lining and no inner brief. That keeps the shorts comfortable over your own underwear and stops the fabric clinging when wet, while the lining still gives the short enough structure to hold its shape.

Does the fabric complaint about cheap Dior shorts apply here?

It was raised about a different Dior shorts replica, so it does not describe this pair. Treat it as a reason to request close-up daylight photos of the shell and print before approving your parcel.
