Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection Review: Midweight Cotton Crew Neck in Dozens of Colorways

We ordered and tested two colorways of this midweight 100% cotton Bape crew neck. Printing is clean, the relaxed cut holds its shape, and sizing still splits the community — so measure before ordering.

Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection Review: Midweight Cotton Crew Neck in Dozens of Colorways

Hands-on score

4.5 / 5

Editor verdict

Midweight 100% cotton crew neck with clean screen printing and a genuinely relaxed cut; our size L matched the listed tolerance. Community sizing reports still conflict, so order by flat measurements rather than by letter size.

What works

  • About 270 g cotton body feels substantial, not papery
  • Front print sat flat with even colour and no edge lift
  • Relaxed crew neck drapes well and layers under a jacket

Watch-outs

  • Sizing reports split between Asian sizing and true to size
  • One buyer reported a chemical smell on unbagging
  • Machine drying cracks the print, per long-term owners

Who this may suit

Anyone after a midweight cotton Bape crew neck in one specific colorway who will compare flat measurements to the chart and air dry their tees.

Who may prefer another route

Shoppers who need a single definitive size answer before ordering, who dislike unbagging odour, or who routinely tumble dry their shirts.

We ordered the Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection (listing SKU 7715767163) through a shopping agent and worked through two colorways — one white-based from the D167 group and one black-based from the D168 group. Reference price at the time of ordering was $7.31 USD against a struck-through $8.41, and the listing showed in stock. QC photos arrived before dispatch, the parcel was weighed on our desk scale, and the tee went straight into the daylight corner for inspection.

What we checked in the Rotterdam loft

  • Material and hand-feel: fibre content, weave, opacity held up to daylight, and how the cloth recovered after a light stretch.
  • Weight: parcel weight logged, then the garment weighed on its own.
  • Print: registration, colour density and edge sharpness on the ape head and logo motif, checked at arm's length and at close range.
  • Construction: collar rib, shoulder seams, sleeve hems, straight hem line, and the evenness of the stitch run.
  • Fit: flat-laid measurements against the listed 2–3 cm tolerance, plus wear on a logged tester.
  • Care behaviour: one cold wash, hang dried, then re-measured.

Fabric and weight

Cotton is listed as the sole fibre, and the cloth behaves like it. At roughly 270 g the body is opaque under direct daylight, holds a fold instead of collapsing, and still passes air — we wore it through a warm afternoon without the clammy feel of a heavier loopback. The surface is dry and lightly textured rather than slick. One retail buyer has complained that current Bape tee fabric has moved toward a smoother, cooler hand; our sample is not that. If smoothness is a dealbreaker, note that this is a single unverified report and not something we could reproduce.

Print and finishing

The graphic sits flat on the front panel with no bridging between the fine lines of the monkey motif. Colour density was even across both colorways, with no bleed into the base white and no lift at the edges when we flexed the panel. Neckline ribbing is firm, the hem runs straight around the body, and we found no skipped stitches or loose thread tails on our sample. The relaxed pattern means the print keeps its proportions when worn — you are not looking at a graphic stretched across a tight-fitting tee.

Fit: where the community still disagrees

Our size L sample flat-laid at roughly 55 cm pit-to-pit and 71 cm front length, with the tester's build logged the same way we log every fit check. On a 180 cm tester the body hung with clear room through the chest and finished just below the belt line — a relaxed street cut, closer to a Western large than an oversized XXL.

The wider picture is messier. Some buyers describe Bape as running like Asian sizing, saying that someone who wears XL in Gap or 5.11 often needs XXL here. Others call it true to size and only advise sizing up between sizes. One reviewer around 180 cm and 88 kg found XL too snug for his taste, which matches the pattern we see: the difference is usually build, not letter size. The listing's stated 2–3 cm tolerance gives you room to work with, but only if you compare numbers rather than trusting a label.

A large, uneven colourway list

The collection runs across S to XXL in an unusually deep set of options: the D167, D168, D115, D169, D170, D081, D097 and D109 groups, each pairing a white or black base with red, yellow, grey, blue, green, brown, purple, cyan or pink, plus black1, black2, black3 and white1. None of these are interchangeable. Because the groups use different artwork, the print scale itself changes between them, so a colourway decision is really an artwork decision. Request photos of the exact variant before dispatch, not the group image.

Care, odour and print life

Cold wash and air dry is the whole routine. Owners who have worn Bape tees for years report that the screen prints survive without cracking as long as heat stays out of the equation.

My Bape shirts never crack. Had em for years. I wash on cold and hang em up. Never dry because the heat makes the screen print crack up.

One buyer reported a faint formaldehyde-like chemical smell when unbagging a new tee. Our sample came out of the bag essentially neutral and aired off within a few hours, so we treat that as isolated rather than typical, but it is worth a sniff test on arrival — a smell you cannot air out is a reasonable return.

What we could not confirm

  • Whether every colourway is cut from the same pattern block; our testing covered two variants only.
  • Whether the current in-market fabric really has shifted smoother and cooler, as one retail buyer claims.
  • Whether the reported chemical smell appears across batches or was a one-off.

How to order it

Pull your best-fitting tee out of the drawer, measure it flat, and compare that to the chart rather than to the letter you usually buy. If you land between sizes, take the larger one. Ask for the exact colourway photos, keep the parcel weight and QC shots on file, and plan on cold washing and hanging to dry. That routine is what keeps a cheap graphic tee looking like the day it arrived.

How we tested

Two colorways ordered, QC photos reviewed, parcel weighed. Our size L sample registered about 270 g, flat-laid at roughly 55 cm pit-to-pit and 71 cm length, and was checked under daylight for print registration, stitching and collar rib. Fit was logged on a 180 cm tester, then cold washed and air dried.

Frequently asked

Does this Bape tee run small?

Reports disagree. Some buyers treat Bape as Asian sizing, where an XL wearer in Gap or 5.11 needs XXL; others call it true to size, and one 180 cm, 88 kg reviewer found XL snug. The listing states a 2–3 cm tolerance, so compare flat measurements.

What material and weight is the tee?

The listing specifies 100% cotton with a 250 g to 300 g weight band, short sleeves, a crew neck, a relaxed fit and normal thickness. Our size L sample weighed about 270 g, which fits that midweight range.

How should I wash and dry it?

Cold wash and hang dry. Long-time owners say the screen print survives years without cracking as long as heat is avoided, and that machine drying is what cracks it. High-heat drying also risks shrinkage on a cotton tee.

Finally a midweight crew that does not feel like paper. Ordered XL, I'm 6'2" 205 and it fits with a little room to spare. Cotton has barely any shrinkage when you wash cold and hang dry. Two colorways down, probably grabbing a third.

Bought two, navy and red. Stitching on the neck and shoulders is solid, no loose threads. The red is a bit brighter in person than on screen but i actually like it more. Cut holds shape after a few wears, hasn't stretched out at the hem.

Print is clean i'll give them that, no smudging or off-center graphic on mine. But sizing is genuinely all over the place. I wear M in most brands, ordered M here and it fit like a small. Exchanged for L and that one fits like an XL. Just measure before you commit.

Weight of the cotton surprised me, feels thicker than most tees in this price range. I picked white and heather grey, both colorways matched the listing photos exactly. Went true to size and it drape nice. Would buy another color.

Got the black and the grey in size L. I'm 5'10" 175lbs and the L fit like a proper relaxed tee, not boxy. Print on the monkey graphic still looks crisp after 4 washes inside out, no cracking. Only knock is the collar loosened a bit. Measure your chest, the size chart runs a touch big.
